May require a general contractor - Most times when installing a multi-slide door, it may require framing changes. Depending on where you live, if the change is made to a load bearing wall, you have to pull a permit and have an engineer sign off on the change. This will usually require a GC to handle the details for you. A simple French door or window installation can be done by a licensed window or door company. Cost - These doors can be quite expensive. Most time when I give a remodeling customer / homeowner an estimate on these doors, it usually becomes price prohibitive. They see a French door or sliding glass door at a home store for 800 dollars and figure these doors are three times as big, so they should be three times as much right? Wrong, you see standard size doors are made with stock sized tempered glass. Multi-slide doors are custom sized and the price grown exponentially when you go to custom sizes.
Once the door is on its side, you can closely examine the wheels and the track. Most commonly, you will find the wheels are full of soot and debris, and the track is also likely very dirty. To clean the wheels, use compressed air and needle tip pliers. Be careful to pull every last hair out of the wheel bearings. It is wise to be diligent in this step, so you don′t have to make a habit of this process. Once the wheels are completely clean, spray a little bit of penetrating oil into the wheel bearings, spinning the wheel as you apply the oil. (The best choice for the oil is DuPont′s Teflon non-stick dry film lubricant.) It is equally important to clean the track that the wheels rest on. Use damp paper towels to remove the grit and dirt, and then spray the penetrating oil along the track so it is well-applied. Use a clean paper towel to ensure it is evenly applied.
You want to be sure and order all of the materials you will need to do the job at the same time that you order the replacement door. That way, when the new door comes in 2 to 4 weeks later, you will have everything ready to do the job. In addition to any trim needed, you are also going to need caulk, a roll of R-13 Insulation, liquid nails for the track, 4" deck screws, shims, dust masks, and safety glasses. Once the new door arrives, it will be time to take out the old door. That will be our topic in next week′s article.
